On a recent field trip, twenty-eight Washington Township high school students enrolled in Project Lead The Way: Introduction to Engineering visited Urschel Laboratories, Inc., a world-leading manufacturer of precision industrial cutting equipment based in Chesterton, Indiana. Urschel has been at the forefront of innovative manufacturing and engineering since its founding in 1910. The company designs, engineers, and produces highly-specialized industrial food cutting machines used in processors around the globe — from potato chip slicers and vegetable dicers to shredders and milling systems. During the tour, students gained firsthand insight into the full spectrum of product design and development. They saw cutting-edge manufacturing facilities where critical components are crafted with precision, explored engineering workspaces, and learned how Urschel’s patented technologies help feed millions of people every day. One of the highlights of the visit was meeting company engineers who shared real-world perspectives on careers in engineering, innovation, and problem-solving. Students asked questions about the design process, product testing, and the role of teamwork in building products that are shipped to customers in over 130 countries. The experience gave these aspiring engineers a unique glimpse into a world-class manufacturing environment which is 100% employee owned, inspiring many to consider future opportunities in engineering, technology, and advanced manufacturing.
